[read more…] { 22 comments } se brazil asking xperia x10 owners to send in their handsets to upgrade to android 2.3.3 by x10 on november 28, 2011 in firmware , news the sony ericsson xperia x10 gingerbread update started to roll out at the end of july . however, those in brazil are only just starting to receive the update . to make matters worse, sony ericsson is telling owners that the update can only be completed by se technicians. that means users have to send their handset to sony ericsson to upgrade their handset. the service is free thankfully and the company promises that it should take around seven calendar days to complete. we’re not entirely sure why the handset would need to be sent back, especially given that everyone else around the world could upgrade their x10 to gingerbread using pc companion or seus. if anyone has any ideas let us know in the comments below. thanks crispim! { 36 comments } bit9 says xperia x10 is third most vulnerable smartphone by x10 on november 22, 2011 in firmware , news security specialists bit9 has released a new report that suggests the sony ericsson xperia x10 is the third most vulnerable smartphone. the list compromises “ devices that pose the most serious security and privacy risk to consumers and corporations “. the most vulnerable device is the samsung galaxy mini according to the report, with the htc desire in second place. i’m unsure of the exact methodology bit9 use to determine which phones are most vulnerable but the version of android and timeliness of updates appears to play a part. they suggest this means that “ security vulnerabilities are not being maintained, bugs are not being patched, and loopholes in your system are being left open “. the last firmware for the x10 was 2.3.3 and the latest from google is 2.3.7 (ignoring ics for now). this seems a bit harsh to us considering that the 2011 xperia line-up is only on android 2.3.4. we’re sure bit9 is talking its own book here but the infographic below is an interesting read nonetheless. [read more…] { 18 comments } android 4.0 ics alpha build hits the xperia x10 [video] by x10 on november 22, 2011 in firmware , news , video android 4.0 ice cream sandwich has been ported to the sony ericsson xperia x10 by the wizards over at xda-developers. recognised developer zdzihu says that this is a “very early build” where “most of the stuff does not work”. what does work is the radio, calls, sms, bluetooth, gps and wireless is “almost working”. mobile data is also kind of working but seems to disconnect when it gets the ip address. this alpha rom certainly is not stable enough to be used on a daily basis (that’s the whole point of an alpha release), however if you want to test it out and leave some feedback then there’s no harm in giving it a try. either way this is great work from the devs. sony ericsson is unlikely to release ics for the xperia x10, so this is the first step on the path to a stable ics custom rom. click through for a couple of video demos of the new ics x10 rom.
